Polio Pulse

Polio Pulse provides social listening insights to support GPEI’s polio interventions on disinformation, crisis communication, and strategic communication. Data is monitored from polio-endemic and outbreak countries and geographies classified by GPEI, covering 12 major languages spoken in these regions. The platform is managed by the UNICEF Digital Community Engagement (DCE) team.

Analysis

A social media user shared a video of a Nigerian pastor who frequently promotes anti-vaccine myths and claimed that all vaccines are unsafe. The post also falsely states that children only get polio after being vaccinated. Over 130 people shared the posts, and around half of the responses agreed with the false claims.

Recommendations

Polio vaccines have eliminated wild polio in all but two countries worldwide, including Kenya and Nigeria. Communicators may explain that vaccinated children are protected against all forms of polio. Messaging may emphasize that polio outbreaks happen when not enough people are vaccinated and can only be prevented by vaccinating all children.
