Analysis

A French TV clip of professor Didier Raoult stating that the polio strain detected in Gaza’s sewage is “a vaccine virus, not natural” has resurfaced, implying that authorities deliberately introduced a virus into the region. Social media users share the comment to fuel conspiracies that vaccines are bioweapons, especially in the context of the ongoing conflict. This misinterpretation can erode trust in emergency vaccination campaigns meant to stop the spread of vaccinederived poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2).

Recommendations

Clarify that cVDPV emerges when communities have low immunisation coverage; the weakened virus from the oral vaccine can mutate only if allowed to circulate. Emphasise that vaccination campaigns aim to break this cycle and that failing to vaccinate will leave children vulnerable to paralysis. Contextualise Raoult’s statement by explaining that while the virus originated from a vaccine, it exists because vaccination was interrupted, not because of malicious intent. Use trusted local health voices to deliver this message clearly and empathetically.
