Shaping the Path to a Polio-free World and Beyond

This March 2026 document is a single-page visual brief produced by the GPEI that presents a high-level overview of the two complementary strategic frameworks guiding the final phase of polio eradication and the transition to a permanent polio-free world. Though brief in page count, it serves a critical communication function by succinctly describing the relationship between the active eradication strategy and the post-certification planning framework.

The document describes two interconnected strategic documents. First, the Polio Eradication Strategy 2022–2029 — an extension of the original 2022–2026 framework — which sets the course for eradicating WPV1 by 2027 and eliminating cVDPV2 by 2029 through high-quality house-to-house campaigns combined with strong community surveillance. Second, the "Sustaining a Polio-free World" framework, which outlines the essential functions that must continue after transmission interruption: immunization, surveillance, laboratory networks, containment, and emergency response capacity.

By presenting both frameworks together, the document communicates that the GPEI is thinking simultaneously about completing eradication and securing its permanence — objectives that must be pursued in parallel, not sequentially. The extension of the strategy timeline to 2029 is significant, reflecting updated assessments of realistic eradication timelines while signaling that commitment to reaching the finish line has not diminished.

This document's communication value lies in its synthesis function. In advocacy settings — donor briefings, high-level meetings, political engagements — presenting this integrated vision in a single page is operationally significant, preventing the misperception that certification marks the end of all polio-related responsibilities.

Document value: Single-page visual synthesis of the two strategic frameworks guiding the GPEI's final phase, enabling rapid orientation for high-level audiences and supporting advocacy about the extended eradication timeline.
